L'ex colonnello delle SS è morto la settimana scorsa per cause naturali all'età di 97 anni, dopo essere sfuggito all'arresto, grazie anche a certi giudici compiacenti - di Inti

(AGI) - Berlino, 13 feb. - E' morto Friederich Engel, "il macellaio di Genova".
La procura di Amburgo ha reso noto che l'ex colonnello delle SS è deceduto la settimana
scorsa per cause naturali all'età di 97 anni.
Nel 2002 Engel era stato condannato a sette anni di carcere come responsabile dell'eccidio
del Passo del Turchino, avvenuto il 19 maggio del 1944: il tribunale di Amburgo lo ritenne
colpevole di aver ordinato l'esecuzione di 59 prigionieri politici.
Nel 2004 la sentenza venne annullata dai giudici della Corte federale tedesca di giustizia, secondo i quali sebbene l'ordine della strage fosse venuto da Engel, non c'erano prove sufficienti per l'accusa di omicidio.
Si doveva, questa la loro opinione, fare un nuovo processo, che pero' non era possibile data l'età dell'imputato. Engel, capo dell'Aussenkomando, il servizio di sicurezza nazista in Liguria, era ritenuto responsabile anche della strage della Benedicta: 147 partigiani furono catturati durante un rastrellamento nell'aprile del 1944.
Catturato dalle forze statunitensi vicino Francoforte, nel 1947 evase e visse sotto falso nome fino al 1954, quando riassunse la sua vera identità. La certezza di averla fatta franca era tale che nel 1971 ebbe la sfrontatezza di testimoniare a favore di Bosshammer, deportatore di ebrei da Genova, senza che nessun giudice tedesco gli chiedesse conto del suo passato.

Per lui, come per tutti gli assassini nazifascisti vale la pena di ricordare le parole di Piero Calamandrei:
